“Ohio Free Will Baptist
Heritage”
Free Will Baptist History from the Buckeye Perspective
By Rev. Jim McComas
I am thrilled to bring you the first of a series of articles here in the
Ambassador Magazine on our Ohio Free Will Baptist History. Much has been written
over the years in books and periodicals about our history as a denomination as a
whole, but over the next few months here in the pages of our State paper, I
would like to specifically spotlight the rich heritage that we as Ohio Free Will
Baptist’s enjoy.
I am, in general, a history buff. American History especially fascinates me.
Over the past few years I have become very involved in the study of our
denomination. This study has led me to grave sites and churches across our state
and literally across the country, and has allowed me to acquire a small library
of historic Free Will Baptist literature and collectibles. I have found Free
Will Baptist History to not only be an enjoyable hobby, but one that has
inspired and encouraged my soul at the same time. It is my prayer that these
articles might bless your heart, while at the same time stir in you some of the
same passion that I have for preserving our heritage.
While I am sharing knowledge with you, I hope that you can give me much in
return. Along the way I will be soliciting your help in drawing as full a
picture of our history as is possible. I will be asking for your help in the
form of old photographs, church histories, personal recollections and memories
of events long past, all of which I know is out there just waiting to be
accessed. I’m excited about what we can learn together through this column, and
I ask now for your suggestions, insights and ideas.
Here are some subjects that I hope to cover in upcoming articles:
Basic reasons why it’s important for us to study Free Will Baptist History.
Free Will Baptist Pioneers who came to Ohio, and the churches they started
The role Ohio Churches played in major events in National and Denominational
History such as the Civil War and the infamous Free Will Baptist merger of
1910-11 with the Northern Baptist Convention.
The Modern Free Will Baptist Denomination and Ohio’s role in it.
The Ohio State Association as we know it today and how it got its start.
Profiles of important Ohio Free Will Baptists of the past 50 years, and what
they have meant to our work.
I hope this will be a profitable adventure for all of us. I’ll look forward to
seeing you next issue. Please contact me and let me know your thoughts.
